HISTORY

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008. It was a day like any other, packed onto a 9:46 train for an afternoon of museum-going and art-appreciation in Florence. Lauren and Sharlie were off to a good start, already into an intense round of Would You Rather, with Kimberly laughing at their side and Elizabeth sitting opposite, reading a NYT article about a Life School opening in London. She read a bit of it aloud and we thought, Hey. The world needs more things like that. And since we do not have the funds or real estate to set up a school, why not a club?

So here we are.

After an emergency weekend rendezvous and a quick cut-and-paste flyer, the first official Life Club meeting was held at exactly 12:17 p.m. a week later. Members discussed the four main elements we felt embodied Life Club: Loving, Inventing, Frolicking, and Enjoying. And after an intense debate over pink oranges versus violet pomegranates, all members left feeling edified and uplifted.

From there we Instigators could not get it out of our heads. We came up with more and more ideas of events and topics of discussion and means of making this a worldwide club. We began meeting every Thursday afternoon, our numbers growing exponentially until we could hardly fit into the back room at Sandy’s CafĂ©. We led Deep Discussion meetings, organized spontaneous Life activities, and planned for the year ahead. And after two months of a trial-run with nothing but success, it’s time to get this up and running. Come January, Life Club goes official. You won’t want to miss it.
